COMPULSORY BASIC TRAINING (CBT).

A CBT certificate validates the provisional status on your licence.  It lasts for 2 years. It is a basic training course aimed at giving you very basic skill sets before you can ride with Learner plates on the road.

This is a one day course starting at 10am & finishing about 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Mopeds & 125cc motorcycles are catered for.

The course is split into 5 modules comprising of indoor theory, practical off road training & on road assessment.  IT is a course & NOT a test.  There is no written elements apart from a simple application form.

The course is defined & laid out by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) & all areas must be covered so whether your a 16 year old novice or a 50 year old knowledgeable expert, the course will be exactly the same - sorry - no short cuts here! If you do not reach the required standard by the end of the day then further free training will be offered.


Here's what the CBT course comprises of:-

MODULE 1 - Classroom theory covering:-  licence check, aims of approved training course, importance of having right equipment & clothing, eyesight check.

MODULE 2 - Classroom theory & off road practice covering:-  explanation of motorcycle & its controls, explanation of basic machine checks, take bike on & off stand, wheeling bike round to left & right with controlled braking, start & stop the engine, use of safety position when stopped.

MODULE 3 - off road practice covering:-  move off in a straight line & controlled halt, ride machine in figure of eight under control, ride machine slowly under control, carry out 'u' turn manoevre, controlled emergency stop, controlled braking using both brakes, change gear, rear observation, simulated right & left hand turns with OSM & PSL routines & life savers.

MODULE 4 - on road training in classroom covering:- importance & understanding the highway code, defensive riding & anticipation of other road users, rear observations at appropriate times, correct road positioning, spaces between vehicles when following, regard to the effect of various weather conditions, need to be clearly visible - conspicuity aids - fluorescent & reflective, legal requirements when riding on the road, understand why motorcyclists are more vulnerable than other road users, ride at correct speed & according to road & traffic conditions, consequences of aggressive attitudes when riding, importance of hazard perception, dangers of alcohol & drug use.

MODULE 5 - practical on road riding covering:- Roundabouts, junctions, pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, gradients, bends, obstructions, 'u' turn, emergency stop, debrief.

TIP 3 - Correct clothing saves lives.  Even if your budget is tight - do not scrimp on this item.

TIP 4 - ideally, your instructor should be the same person throughout your training for obvious reasons - will this be the case for your course - just ask.
